Y block distributor

I have a new distributor in an opened Motorcraft box that I inherited when my dad passed away. The box had "Ford 292 Distributor" written in sharpie and the part #DA-647-C3TZ-12127-K on it. The distributor has the #'s C5JF, 12127, A, and 2K1S on the upper housing and the shaft has C97F-12131-A and 20 and an "A" inside an oval on it. I do not know how to place a photo in a thread. I have photos. If needed I could email.

My question is can anyone verify this as a late (57-64) model Y block distributor...Number Dummy?

Thanks!

Greg

I should also mention that inside the box was a Pertronix Ignitor box (part # 1281) with an ignitor module that installed and fit perfect. Thanks ahead for the help.

It sounds like you may have a Y distributor with a later housing. If the casting below the bowl area is triangular, that would confirm it. May have been a factory rebuild or late factory replacement part. I recently obtained one of these too. No problem, in fact it may be a lot better. Getting parts like centrifugal weights for the 292/312 distributors is Very difficult. The centrifugal weights in the later housings MAY be in better shape than earlier ones and also could be easier to find if in need of replacement. One of the guys on Y's forever pointed out that the later weights can be switched for two different advanaces, 10 and 13 dist. degrees I think. The Pertronix number is the correct one for a 57 to 64 dist., and a 65 to 74 dist. Points cap and rotor also interchange between earlier and later.

I have a picture of that distributor with C5JF on the housing, sitting on a Motorcraft box.

As 46 observes, this is like the newer style distributors: rather than the centrifugal weights looking like commas and being so heavy, they look triangular, almost like a wankel rotor, and rather than being cast , they are stamped steel and much lighter.

The old style has steel pins that work in slots of the point cam assembly to provide advance. The pins on the comma-shaped weights wear, which causes slop in the advance mechanism. In a wrecking yard, I once went thru about 10 distributors before I could find a pair of good weights.

Were I in your shoes, I would count my blessings and consider myself fortunate.

Thanks guys,

The casting below the bowl is triangle shaped. I will replace the load-o-matic in the 272 with this one. I will block off the vacuum since it still has the stock style carb. I should see some improvement.

About the stock carb. You could get a late model 2V intake manifold for little to nothing and put on a small Autolite 2100, then the vacuum wouldnt need blocked off. IMO carb and intake would be an improvement. Delivery to Mt. Shasta is free.

Mike,

You crack me up! I'm not sure but I think the manifold and maybe the carb on the '57 292 is what you describe. I'll have to check. Anyway, this engine is going to be replaced by the stroker I'm in the process of gathering parts and info for. What is the difference between "late" model and 56 model 2v intakes anyway? I just remebered I have a spare 2v intake with the small window pickup too.

I'll takes some photos and send them to you. You can enlighten me.
