I was told today that I have traction lok when I had the bearings replaced. My question is how does it work? Ant time that I spin wheels on the dirt it sometimes leaves 2 marks and sometimes only 1. On the pavement it seems to only leave one mark even when you power brake it. I just wanted to know why it doesnt always lock up both wheels all the time. thanks.
Chuck, This is a non mechanic response. The two wheels cannot be locked together because the truck has to be able to turn, while pulling. If the rear wheels were locked together that would present a REAL problem.

In the still cool hours of the night, you can hear chevys rusting away.
It should somewhat lock up the axle when one tire starts spining, but not all the time or when you turn. Say you were out in the hills wheeling and you have one tire up on a hill and it lifts one of the rears off the ground, it would apply power to the wheel with traction. There are basicaly two types of these devices, limited slips and full lockers. limited slips are a bunch of plates that act like a clutch. A locker actually locks the two sides together, like a spool that you would use for drag racing, but when you let off the power, it unlocks.
