some days i really think this truck does not like me!! fixed the fender solenoid and battery (yes, just one, don't ask), drove her all yesterday and today, and now no start again. i checked cables/terminals, #9 and #22 fuses. tried smacking the starter, tried moving gearshift all the way down and back in case she didn't park right...nada. i'm about to go pull the starter and get it tested. i may just replace it anyways...did i miss anything?

Have some one hold the key in the start position while you hit the starter , & (make sure you hit the big part of it)
My truck was doing same thing, it was sticking wasn't it? Now no start and even if it will it will be very sluggish. IMO you need a new one or have yours rebuilt. After mine kept going after I turned the key off I had to pull off positive cables, it was super hot witch after that it would not turn over unless I would hit it with a hammer and try to start it about 10 times. Anyhow I had to cough up 100 bucks and got one off ebay, starts great now!!
My 97 was driving me crazy too with start/no start at random. From the solinoid you replaced down to the starter is a wire (about 12ga.) to energize the solinoid on the starter. On my truck the wire was red and ran with the big batttery cable. The terminal end down at the starter had become unsoldered and was making momentary contact. When I took my unneeded starter back to Ford the parts guy said, Yup, commmon problem with those. You might check it out. You have two wires down at the starter, this is the smaller one, Remove it and hold the wire with one hand and with a pair of pliars pull on the terminal. Or just pull on the wire while it is still attached. If bad it will pull right off. As a matter of fact It only takes a couple feet of wire and two terminals to replace it, pretty easy and cheap, Id do it anyway.
i had a heck of a time getting that little wire back on...i wiggled and yanked a good bit, so i think it's ok. the starter (surprise surprise) tested good again, but the connector from the solenoid to the starter was a little loose and arced sparks halfway across the store... LOL
anyway i tightened that...it's kinda scorched and melted off the covering. so- went to put statrer back in and it's freezing cold, so i dropped the nut for the little wire and it went bye bye. ran to home depot for some more and finally got everything wired up. lo and behold she started, so she's home. that plus the hot chocolate the lady at the church where i was working on her were the two good things that happened today. everything else....sucked. where are moms when u need a hug??
If its arcing where the feed into the starter is , thats probably where your problem is. When it arcs across directly to ground it won't do anything cuz the electricity doesn't get in the starter but goes directly to ground.
there's scorch marks all over the starter...she started up good today. i was paranoid and wouldn't shut her off til i got back home, so we'll see what happens tomorrow. new shocks go in monday and hopefully a few other things, like rear tire balance to address death wobble. i had also forgotten that one of her quirks is an intermittently working dash light behind the speedo/tach. driving home in the dark lately has been interesting
oh and the cummins failed inspection...anyone anywhere else have to take off brushguards to have headlights checked?!?

Ha Ha, yeah my 87 had to take it off every year, what a pain, used to use the Exxon station on Tidewater Drive just west? of Little Creek Oh the Memories of Norfolk/VaBeach............
it's just the dumbest thing i've ever heard...i mean if it's legal to drive it on the road with the brush guard, OBVIOUSLY it doesn't impact headlight function! now the reverse lights not working i'll concede. and they claim she's got a bad ball joint or bearing...can't remember which she said. apparently they were on about the tire could fall off at any moment. but the brush guard...i think they just like to annoy people. we'll be taking the cummins to my buddy on monday too!
I had trouble getting mine to pass inspection this year. Had to put a muffler on and route the exhaust out from under the bed. Ended up with a 10" long 4" glasspack. Lol didn't change the sound at all...
Sorry you're having trouble. I am still working on my oil cooler. Got it out, torn apart, new o-rings, and now won't press back together. So I have to find someone with a big press now.
