Taking apart this pile of heads I have. And was wondering why some have double springs and some do not. And was wondering which is best. And of course thanks in advance.
I'm gonna bet that most of the inner springs are really just dampers. They look like springs but they're flat spiral wound steel.
According to Steve Christ's book, "How to Rebuild your Big Block Ford", only the '61 to '62 390 HP, the '62 to '63 406, and the '63 427's used dual valve springs.
By the way, if it turns out that you do have a pile of heads with dual springs, can I have your address?
Which springs are best, or heads? As far as the springs go, I'd use the ones with the dampers in them. My guess is the dampers cancel out unwanted harmonics in the springs.
As far as the heads go, give me some casting numbers and I can give you some ideas.
