ABS light and 4x4 help

I am posting this for help on my brother's 2004 f150 lariat crew cab 4x4. His ABS light has been on and when he is in reverse or drives over 15 mph forward he is having a (clicking) sound coming from his pass side front wheel. he also told me that the 4wd hasnt been engaging properly since the light came on and his fuel milage dropped significantly. He took it to a ford dealer(which i am going to add-ford service depts pretty much suck with his and my experiences). the dealer service dpt said it was the speed sensor on the rear differ causing both the sound and abs light. which is quite freaking odd seeing as how the sound is coming from the front wheel. that dealer charged him 100 dollars to run engine diagnostics. then they sent it over to another dept and charged him another 100. then after the so called diagnostics they said it was speed sensor and would cost him $240 to replace labor and all--for one F-ing bolt and a clip on part on the rear differential!!!!!. I laughed (but this was premature laughter since I would end up paying for the parts and doing labor myself.) (NOTE THIS IS MY OLDER BROTHER) anyway I trusted the ford guy mistakingly! we ended up having to buy the part from ford dealer since neither Orielly's nor autozone carry it. so 80 bucks for a little speed sensor! and i put it in (knowing this wouldnt fix his issue)---NOW he is still having the clicking sound in the pass side front wheel area and ABS light is still on(ford dealer at reynolds ford in norman ok are the ones who are basically idiots at this point said they would clear the code for another $100 to hook it up to diag machine again)...can someone with an IQ above 50 please help me out with this.My bro has lost his job in this recession, and has three children at home under the age of 5. He is kind of naive and beleives these crappy service guys. I dont want to throw anymore $ away. I only registered to this site for this problem, and really hope someone can help me with this. sorry for so long but he needs the help!

Welcome dusty! Ford 4wd hubs lock in on a vacuum. I remember a while back that there is a really definitive thread on the forum somewhere. Someone else might be able to post a pointer before I have the time to find it. The symptoms of the abs light and click sounds to me like that would be the place to start looking.
Keep us posted this could be an interesting thread (considering the season and all).

Edited this in after looking it up.

Good luck.

You IWE's are leaking vacuum. If your getting a clicking, the wheel bearing/hub gear is problably rounded off also. The cause of all of this is the one way check valve leaking on the vacuum supply line leading to the 4x4 solenoid behind the battery on the firewall.

The ABS light is problably a bad sensor. Has the light come back on since they replaced the rear sensor? I'de guess if the light is still coming on, the RF sensor may be bad, or you may have a loose wheel bearing that took the sensor out.

Mind you that all this info is based on what you typed. I have neither seen the concern nor scanned the system for trouble codes. Just my thoughts on what I've seen.

No, it's more likely the wheel end/vacuum regulator. Several users have had issues with the check valve leaking. I haven't seen any issues on CVs, it's always been the IWE.

Auto Zone, Advance or about any other chain of parts store will read codes for free. And they can also clear them.
