They are interesting vehicles. I personally would say they were the "smart car" of their time. The photo I provided was taken in the US. So it is obvious that even though gas prices were cheap fuel economy was an issue even though the muscle car era was ramping up in the late 50`s and peaking in 1969-1970 before the emission era killed them off in 1973.
Rumor has it that the Fiat (remember them,.... they own Chrysler ) will be releasing the Topolino for 2010.
Sharing a platform with the new Isseta and made in the former Yugo factory in Serbia, reported to deliver 85mpg.
I wonder if they really will get 85 mpg. Bigger question is will people buy them. They have to be priced right I know. Lots of people wont get a smart car or a hybrid or anything like that to be fuel efficent because of the cost.
Well since my post was surreptitiously edited I'll walk away. I made the point about the lugs and the fact that it couldn't be a Smart in my original post. Glad the moderators in the forums I hang out in don't pull these stunts.
uhm...Are you sure? I realize your post was made a bit before mine, but I read your post right before I posted and it read the same as it does now. Hell I dunno.
There have been times where I swore I put something in a post, but never actually did (i.e.- I was thinking about how I wanted to put it in, but my mind didn't quite connect with my fingers on it)
Maybe all those gas saving dollars go into the food tank, at the drive through window.
Le Car was the 1st standard I drove. I had a slow day in the showroom, so I decided I would learn how to drive and the LeCar was the only used car on the lot that had an owner's manual that actually told you how to drive a standard. I had a blast in that car, I would keep it at high RPMs and whip around corners. The thing felt top heavy, but, never tipped over.
I have always like small cars preferably hatchbacks but the only trouble is I am 6'3'' pushin 270. Not really a small car kinda guy.
Whats really funny is last year at the NAIAS, Smart had there cars there and me and some guy roughly the same size got in a Smart cart at the same time (me in the passenger side, him in the driver side) neither of us were paying attention to just who was getting into the other side and when we both finally sat down we just looked over at each other and started laughing. Sadly we couldn't even close the doors, it may be time to go on a diet

I've always liked Fiat Toplinos, especially the older ones with the blown hemis on nitro.
I don't know the mileage, but I think it's a bit short of 85 mpg...
Ever driven one of the Turbo Fuego's? Cramped fit in the passenger area and the engine had very little oomph, but when that turbo kicked in, it would throw you back in your seat a bit - kinda funny, actually...
