thermostat question

I got a new thermostat, drained the coolant and pulled the housing to find the new stat is bigger physically than the old one.It won't fit in the block. Is there more than one part number? It's a 94 7.3 Turbo.I looked up the stat for a 6.9,7.3 and the PowerStroke at Rockauto and get the same part number.Anybody know what is going on here?

you should only buy a thermostat from ford or international. parts store t-stats don't fit, or will make your engine overheat if they do fit. this is one of those parts that is a dealer only item.

Didn't you mention a 205 degree t-stat in another thread? I've always heard that the "magic temp" for a diesel engine is 203 degrees, but typically the t-stats temp settings are below that number. Everything I've read on this forum points in the direction of buying t-stats solely from the Ford or IH dealerships.

Ok,I found another number.I guess the one they had listed was the same as a Powerstroke?I ended up getting a 195 degree stat for a gas engine because I was going to have to order and wait again. It seems to be working OK and the one that was in the truck when I got it was 195 degree.I know the factory calls for 205 degrees for a reason but has anybody had any problems with a 195 degree thermostat?

I don't have a problem with a 195 degree stat I think the last one I bought from international was 195. I was at a stant seminar (school) once and they claim that 195 means that is when it starts opening it will not be fully open until 212 degrees.
Now there has been many cases of any parts house even the right part numbers not working in the IDI motors. I have always used dealers (international) for mine. so I personally can't verify this but for a stat you are probably looking at less than 5 bucks difference I wont risk an aftermarket stat.

The one I got for the gas engine is a Stant. There is a rubber seal around the thermostat that was called for.The book said to remove the seal and that makes it the same diameter as the one for the gas engine. It fit like it was made for it but,I was just wondering about the pros and cons of using a 195 degree.
