Replacing my thermostat in my 7.3 IDI. Found a stainless check ball for a check valve buried in crud in the housing.
What is this for?
Also is the stat the same for the Power stroke engine (as the parts counter claims.) I thinking no because I need a gasket this stat did not come with.
And be sure to get either a Motorcraft or International thermostat, the aftermarket ones the parts stores sell for our engines are not correct.
Well, by Monday I'll know if this is correct or not - My old T-stat stuck closed finally, and things were a bit hot driving 50 miles to my apartment from my parents.
Swapped it out with a Car-quest model. So far, it's looking good - rated for 190F, opens around 195, closes at 180-something.
This weekend, however, I'm going to be driving several hundred miles each way, from Spokane to Seattle and back, hauling a trailer. And I've got a turbo, the pump tuned up etc.
If it keeps my temps reasonable, I'll call it a success. If not, well, you'll all know about it.
(and no, I really didn't have a choice to get the 'correct' one).

But it's unknown when they fail, remember my two Chinese ones?
Did it fail open or shut? I haven't seen that thread.
(But either way it's moot(for me), because /some/ thermostat is better than /no/ thermostat.)
Mine failed open so the truck took forever to get to temp, the times it did get to temp.
But from what I read others have had overheating problems.
I know where you're coming from though, sometimes you do what you have to to get rolling again. And since you know what to look for you'll be able to keep an eye out for problems so it's not like working on a family member's car or something where failure means breakdown.
To Chevy_Eater So I was ahhh, way off base as to this little ball. So maybe it come from a old water pump bearing?? And now the passage way in my T-stat housing and block is now clear to let the free flow of coolant distilled water and Max 13 from NAPA flow through after I get the proper stat tomorrow. I do appreciate your good words of wisdom. Probably go to the International dealer. They are closer than any of the four Ford dealers here in Vegas. I also changed my mechanical fuel pump while I was so close to it and had one on hand.
All this started with a leaky Water pump.
I bought my truck in 97 or 98 with 47K miles. Now has 215K and I do not ever remember changing the stat, Injectors or injector pump.
Oh yeah my stat was still working.
Thanks again.

No, that ball belongs there, it lets air through the passage and then closes it when liquid tries to pass through. It's a self bleeder for air in the system.
To chevy_eater, Thank You Thank You. I will put the ball back in with the new stat with the accompanying Gasket from my local McCandless Interantional Dealer here in Vegas. Part # 1807974C94 at a cost of $36.40 with Tax. One of our local Ford dealers only wanted $27.31 + tax but was a lot longer and more out of the way. Worth the extra. Kudos to Shawn The Parts guy at McCandless He was a great help. Look forward to business again with him.

So, as a follow up:
Hauled my trailer over to Seattle. Horrible head wind, was maxing out my engine(~2K RPM + 950-1100F EGTs) pretty much the entire way, going ~70 MPH.
Most of the time, the temps stayed in the 190 range.
The worst part was going up Vantage hill, which is long and steep. I couldn't use my GV overdrive going up there, and couldn't maintain 70MPH going up; I had it in 5th going 60-65, and adjusting my throttle by the EGT temps. I kept it in the 1000-1100 range the entire way.
Ended up with water temps being the highest I'd seen with this t-stat, at 224, which is *well* within the safe range.
Longevity wise, I've no clue. But so far, I'm much happier than what I had before, even before it finally failed.
