Before I do this I just want to make sure this is OK
for the 460 that is Fuel Injected. 1997
The top of the engine hase some weird Ford aluminum bodied aparatus on it. Does not look like a carb at all - more like a miniature back yard blow up slide.....
will I need to do any tuning, calibration, etc. when this is performed ?
The cones were gone when I bought my truck, so this is hearsay. I hear that on a box stock truck you will lose low end torque by cutting the cones. If you add headers and an exhaust system then the cones gotta go. What are your plans for your truck?
9-10 in the city is pretty good for a 460, I get 8-9 in my 92. 10 or so on the highway is the best I get. I actually used to get 11-12 but when I dumped the electric fans (not enough cooling to tow) and swapped the 235/85 pizza cutter tires for 285/75s my MPGs went down.
Are you planning to do more than just cutting the cones?
They are worth around 7hp at WOT for every day driving and since you aren't going to do any thing else to the truck leave them in there you will lose a couple of ft pounds by doing so and they aren't going to give a gain of 1-2 mpg
OldRacerGuy You say you dumped the electric fans because they would not keep things cool when towing. Do you remeber what size fans you were running ? How did you like them other than when towing ? Thanks
I forget the model #, but I had the big twin fan Flex-a-lite setup with variable speed controls. They were working correctly but just didn't keep the thing cool. They are worth 1-2 MPG and a noticeable bump in power, but I bought my Ford for a tow rig.
I had a 16', 3000 pound trailer. I bought my F350, hooked up the little trailer and went to go camping. The truck overheated about 4 miles up the first climb so I went home and swapped the trailer over to my Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma went right up the hill, towing the same load that my F350 couldn't handle. Swapped to the stock clutch fan setup and now I tow an 8000 pound rig up that same hill, no problems.
I noticed a slight improvement but not that much. But it did help some so I think its worth it. I could actually feel it pull better in 2nd gear well actually 3rd gear. Dang granny gear in the ZF.
Yeah I bought a drop in filter, cut the cats and the cones right out and on a winter trip over 1900 kms in two days, across bc, i got 13.7 mpg. and that was manually shifting to drive at 120kmh to avoid losing too much speed on the hills. i then upgraded to a cone filter and flowmaster 40 but then my tranny gave out so i cant really tell you what i got out of it then. i guess the E4OD doesnt like 4wd launches when your street racing....
