I have a 1999 f-350 7.3l turbo diesel with 90,000 miles i have own the truck since new and have never down any maint. on the truck i have replaced the battery twice and this last time i replace them the battery light stays on.. any thought why that would be???? and i bought OEM battery from ford...
The alternator will produce a lot of amps. How many depend on which alternator you have and the demand from your batteries and truck accessories.
Regardless, take the alternator off and take it to a parts store that does free testing. They will tell you if it is working or not. A weak alternator will still charge a battery and probably will not turn on the idiot light.
The battery light could be wired to come on with low system voltage, or it might be wired to come on if the alternator has no output. I'm not sure which way Ford did it. It would be good to find out so you know what the light really means before you start replacing parts.
The battery light is supposed to come on as part of the pre test then is designed to shut off as soon as the alternater starts to make power.
I have the opposite problem on my 03 350 w/6.0 I can not get alternater to make anything at all, and my battery light will not com on even at start up...... Any ideas would be helpfull
