I have a 99 F250 with a 5.4L and my battery light came on the other day, but its very dim and at idle it flashes alittle. Today i drove the truck to work(did not notice a huge change in the volt gauge) and came out 20 min later to a close to dead battery, so i replaces the battery and the light is still on. The alt. is only 4 years old. Any ideas??????????????????
Let the truck sit overnight and cool off. When you go to start it the next day, pop the hood and feel the alternator BEFORE starting it up. If it feels warm, something in the alt is bad (I can't remember what exactly, diodes maybe) and is draining the batteries.
Another thing to check is the plug on top of the alt. Those wires control when the alt turns "on" and a bad connection here can cause it not to charge so well. Make sure the connector is plugged in completely and that none of the wires are loose or the pins in the connector are corroded. If you don't get many replies, post this in the 99-03 7.3L forum thats further down on the main page. We deal with those trucks specifically.
Yes, it is the diodes in the alternator that usually cause this. Despite the fact that the alternator is 4 years old, it probably needs to be replaced.

Now that's interesting. A new alternator AND and new battery, and the light is still on....
Yes, I know, the new alternator could be bad, but you know what? I would get someone, like a spouse or girlfriend, to watch the light while the truck is running, and individually remove and reinsert all of the fuses in the fuse box.
If you find one which forces the light off, then you at least know the circuit. Otherwise, yes, you probably have a bad alternator....
And yes, you'll know when you remove the fuse for the computer.....
