just installed the guide platesand torqued down the rocker arms to 20 ftlbs but now there is still pay in the push rods how do i fix this? ive already got the longest push rods i can find what up with this?
The rockers don't get torqued down with studs & guide plates. They are adjusted for lifter preload with hydro lifters, clearance with solids. What exactly are you working on ?

i torque the studs down first with the guide plates under should they be on top of the bolt the i installed the rockers and torqued to 20 ftlbs?what did i do wrong?
what heads are these being used on, the early style heads with screw in rocker studs or the later heads with bolt down rocker arms?
if you are using guide plates on the early heads with the stock rocker stud and rocker arm, then you have to machine down the stud pedastal the same thickness as the guide plates to keep the dimensions in check or use custom length pushrods to get everything in alignment.
better way would be to use aftermarket rocker studs and locking nuts to get the correct adjustment. better still would be to use aftermarket rocker arms either roller tipped or full roller rockers as the stock arms are fairly weak and can't work with much over .5" lift without binding or failing.
that's yur problem. you can't use the stock rocker studs with that setup. you will also have to use hardened push rods with those guide plates.
change to aftermarket rocker studs (they are fairly cheap) and that should solve most of your problems.
you will still have to check for proper rocker geometry once you have it all togather and adjusted. easiest way to do this is mark the top of the valve stem with either machinist blue or even a felt marker then rotate the engine a couple of times. the wear pattern should be in the centre of the valve stem and not to one side or other.
Those rockers are 1.6 ratio & won't work on your motor. You need the Ford ratio 1.73. Also the guide plates are for 3/8 push rods. There is no reason to run any other than the factory size 5/16 push rods unless you are running a roller cam with very high spring psi.
What factors come into play when deciding to use pushrod guides? Is it a must with roller rockers? I am getting ready to rebuild my set of 68 heads and would like to use a set of harland sharp rocker arms. Will these work without guides and can I use the stock rocker studs? Thanks
