Question 96 Explorer Temp guage/4x4 problem

I have 96 Explorer XLT, 4.0 L that has 180000 miles. My son bought it in June and since we have owned it, the temp guage hasnt worked. The truck sat in a garage for 2 years before we bought it. Tried replacing the temp sending unit and nothing. The needle on the guage is buried past the C. Today, I drove it to work with the 4x4auto on in the snow. About 10 minutes into the trip, I noticed the 4x4 and the 4x4 Low dash lights blink, seemed like it only did it when stopping and starting from a stop. About 45 minutes later, I looked down and the temp guage was working and the needle was in the range my 2003 4.0L Explorer AWD runs. I was excited that the temp guage was working, but it was short lived as I notice the two odometers werent. On the way home from work, the temp guage was in its usual position and the odometer started working again, but the 4x4 lights continued to flash. Any ideas? Thanks

Sounds like a loose plug on the cluster. No easy way around checking that though, you will have to pull the cluster out. I would pull it out and take a pencil eraser and clean all the connections on the circuit board.

Is it like a master plug that runs to the cluster or does each guage have its own plug? Is the cluster removable without dropping the dash? Thanks for the reply

There is usually one or two large plugs. I have never worked on a Explorer, but I would assume it like the trucks, and you may or may not have to pull the headlight and wiper *****, pull some trim off around the ***** and the cluster, and then you can pull the cluster out. If you have a mechanical speedo, you have to reach in behind and unplug the cable by pushing sideways on the retainer clip.
