You problably have a short in your sending unit in the tank. Known concern with these trucks. If you get it scanned, it should throw a code for Fuel Sending Unit A circuit fault. You can replace just the fuel level sending unit, but depending on miles on your truck, I would just put a whole pump/sending unit in.
Take it to the gas station and fill it up. If it takes a full tank - you know it was stolen. If not, looks like you do have a problem with the sending unit. When the tank is full, reset the trip odometer. At least then you can drive and have an idea how much gas you have.
My 04 does that sometimes. When I'm driving it says I have a 1/4 tank. Then I park it and let it sit for awhile and when I start it up again the needle is on the red. I just figured it was reading a little high because the truck was moving around? I alaways get the same milage to each tank?
I think there is a "rollover ball" in the fuel inlet that makes it all but impossible to siphon fuel out.Possibly a small 1/4 inch hose will get passed it,but it would take forever to get enough fuel out to make it worthwhile for a thief.
My 07 had a locking gas cap on it when I bought it...it was such a hassle at fill ups,I replaced it with a regular cap.The locking cap is yours if you want it,just pay the shipping.....2 keys included!
Well...All I can say is that the original locking cap did fine...no codes, but a pain in the butt at fill-ups. The cap I have now has a hole in the top which doesent even require removal to fill it up.Works like a dream, and still no codes.
I have had the problem with both of my wife's 06 Mercury. Dealer claims that the fuel in this area has a higher sulfur content than it used to have and it builds up on the sending unit. The cure was to use Techron brand injector cleaner. I didn't believe them until I tried it...It's worked a couple times. My kid has used it too in his Ford. I haven't had a problem with my F-150 but I'm pretty fussy with where I get my gas. ???
