1999 navigator

My navigator is not running when cold.
Choke is not working. Engine starts oke but when engine is cold it stops when putting in gear or throttle.
When engine is warm it runs oke.
Has anyone a suggestion?
What is a good fault codes reading device that works on windows?

There's no choke, it's fuel injected.

I would suspect either the IAC valve of sticking, or the torque converter is locked up when cold.

The first things I would check are Vacuum Leaks and the IAC Motor (idle air control).

I use an OBD-II reader from the parts store ($120-180) for reading the codes off the check engine lights in all my vehicles. Also my local parts store will read the codes for free, but no diagnostics or mapping. This is a great starting place.

I have also used the High School Auto shop teacher when the kids were in High school. He had all the latest devices and software. Plus I always had a brain teaser when I needed his help. Great for teaching!

Also try searching for manuals or CDs for vehicle on line.

Advance Auto Parts sells the Actron units that vary in price from less than $100 to nearly(?) $300. The one we bought does nearly everything and stored info can be downloaded to your PC. It also comes with a CD for instructions and diagnosis. It seems to be a good tool for those that go into sticker shock over the price of Snap-On and Ford's test equipment.
I've had Actron test equipment for GM and pre-OBD II Ford systems for years and they have always worked fine. I hope this one works as well and lasts as long.

I like the autoxray scanners. If you get their top of the line one it is around $6-700 and is upgradable for free off of the net. That unit will let you scan most cars.
