Ok.. bare with me on this one.. You guys have been wonderful for every issue I have had in the past and I just want to say thanks!
Now.. Its not a problem but I do have a question. This is pertaining to my 79 F100 Stepside 2wd with AC, automatic. Picture sitting on the passanger side. Now look down under the dash and to the right - Exactly where the heater core is. THere is an actuated door there. I have been cleaning out leaves and other left overs from the previous occupants "rodents" dont worry no urine or chewing damage just leaves nuts and sticks.
My question - does that door open up with a switch or something? I tried all of my settings and nothing seems to operate the door to and open position.
The door works by vacumn, does any of your other functions work? Vent, Defrost, Floor? If it only blows through the defrost on all the settings, you need to check to make sure the dash switch is getting vacumn. I would have to look in my manual to see where it goes through the firewall. It should hook up to the engine on the tee on the back of the intake. now that I think about it it may open the door you are talking about with a cable. I need to bring my manual inside.
He's probably talking about pulling the part that the rubber accordian part attaches to at the kick panel. There are four screws holding this peice to the kick panel and the accordian piece goes between this and the evaporator cover part with the door your talking about. Leaves and crap get all down in the cab right there.
On another note about that door operation, if you don't have a glove box in place you can see the vacuum switch right there to the right when looking with the glove box door open. Mine has a black hose with a white stripe hooked to it. It looks kinda like a big metal fuel filter.
are you talking about the door to the vent on the kick panel? or the door that connects to the ductwork under the dash. If its the door under the dash it is a manual opening door. at least mine is anyway.
IDK off the top of my head when it's supposed to be open, I'd have to get in and move the selector around to see when it opens. Maybe someone else knows or has quick access to their truck to find out.

Boy, I did get in my truck and try it...That thing is whacky. AC on, full cool, it opens. I get that. But playing with it in diferent heat and AC modes , that thing opens and closes with no ryme or reason. Not flapping open an closed continously, it does stay opened or closed based on both the upper and lower lever posistions, I'm just toooo stupid to figure mine out. I played with it for about 15 minutes and shut it off.
hmm.. I will try to move my hot/cold selector and see what happens.. THanks for the effort riderman.. I will let yall know tomorrow if mine works when I move the thermostat.. Thanks guys!

Old skewl 79, I just want to thank you for your feedback to the other posters for their educated oppinion. Some people on this site really try to help others..right or wrong..it's nice to give the guy's credit for offering information.
If you still have questions, I will start the beast up tomorrow and write down all the combinations of the door opening...I'll be sober by then...LOL
Finally got my manual out of the shop and time to look it over.
The door you are talking about is what Ford calls outside-recirculate door.
When the lower lever is in off position with engine running- should be open.
When in A/C with temp lever all the way to cool- door open.
The temp lever controls this door. Here is what the manual says.
1. With function control (lower) lever on VENT--all air is outside air (door closed) regardless of temperature lever position.
2. With function control (lower) lever in all other positions system operates on recirculated air with temperature lever on COOL to about 1 1/2 inches toward warm. Outside air is used form about 1 1/2 inches toward warm to warm position.
The outside-recirculate door is worked by the three port vacuum selector located on the control assembly and is operated by the temperature lever. (this part of the manual says) The first1/2 inch of travel changes the system to outside air. At 1 1/2 inch travel the water valve is opened.
Hope all that makes sense. And gives you the answer you need.
The drawing also shows that when the door is shut (outside air) there is no vacuum on the valve.
Sweet Thanks Moose that helps.... I was running late this morning and I dont think the Hwy Patrol would like me crusing down highway ducking to the passanger side to see a little door open and close LOL.. I will check it at lunch.. Thanks again guys!!!
