1999 F250 7.3L diesel, 36k miles, auto transmission...
OK.. so the transmission was leaking fluid (a coolant line? not sure, I am not the one who actually crawled under there).. mildly.. sort of a self-flushing non-problem as long as we added fluid at regular intervals.. it was on the list to be fixed...
was on a trip and drove ~700 miles home.. added fluid periodically, no problems shifting.. at the end of the trip, at the end of the highway, at the end of the highway off ramp... the transmission wouldn't engage at all... added more fluid and was able to limp home... (2 miles)... but it wouldn't shift into 3rd (4th? not sure... not sure if I counted low or not, but I think it was 3rd).. leak was no longer leaking (odd....)... checked fluid level and it was too high!!! go figure...
drained out some fluid (~1.5qt)... and still, no 3rd gear....
where do I start tring to fix this and how badly ($$$$) did I mess this up?
First thing to to is scan for codes. The same tool should be able to read data to see what gear the trans really is in and if the torque converter is locking. If you don't have the tools to do this you really can't fix this yourself.
