this is my first diesel and i just replaced the gp relay and the controller thinking it would solve my cold start problems. still no start turns over and white smoke from the tail pipe just not firing. the next thing i need to check is the glow plugs. thats where i need help. i see what i think is a glow plug. it is a black wire going into this white plastic piece that is going into the valve cover. is that it and if so what all do i have to do to replace the glow plugs? how does that black wire come off. Help please
my wait to start light just blinks for a sec then goes off. I hear a clicking sound but no start when i try to start it. it turns over and smokes a bit just wont fire
after i pull the wire off do i just get a deep well socket and un screw the plug, that is it?

3/8's deep well socket, hopefully they will come right out. Sometimes they become swelled up and there a bitch to get out, you can search through the threads for that info.
i read online that you have to take off the valve cover to get to the gp's. i found that not to be true. I have taken one out and hook it up to the battery via jumper cables and it didnt get hot at all. i hooked the red cable to the top of the gp and the black to the threads of the gp did i do it right?

If it is real cold turn key wait, turn off and go again this will get plugs good and hot!

Read through the sticky post at the top that pertains to your truck. There will info there for testing the GP's. You didn't note what truck you have did you?
ok update i have 3 of the gp's out and bench tested with the battery and jumper cables and all three gp's did not glow. did i do the test right. red pos cable to the tip of the gp and the black neg on threads of the gp. the truck was not running. is this the right way. also should i be able to jump start the truck with the glow plugs not working. its snowing here to answer the temp questions, about 28 deg now.
you can just test them without taking them out with a test light.though, this method in my experience is kinda lame lol.
it just tells you for sure which ones if any,are totally burnt out at least.its a good starting point.-no pun intended lol.
you can get motorcraft/beru plugs (the best) online for about 10 bucks each.if its been awhile, and or,since you know,3 are spent,id just get all 8.
i would check my whole gp system first though,to make sure its all working correctly.this way,you don;t burn out a new set.
