well thats correct on one way to test them you could have used a test light though hook it to the pos side of the battery and pull the connector and touch the glowplug ,if the test light lights chances are its good.do you have a block heater? you could plug it in for a couple hours or make sure the glowplugs cant get power and give it a 1/2 second shot of starting fluid.i will get cussed at for saying that i can see it already.anyway when i said half second squirt that is MAX ether will fire at a very low temp. too much you can bend the rods and thats BEST case scenario.so consider that my disclaimer.lol i have used ether on mine with no adverse effects ,other people have done some real damage though.

Obviously YES you have bad glow plugs. If you hook them up out of the engine like you had described they would glow cherry pretty quick if they were good. If you found 3 dead ones already do yourself a favor and get 8 new ones and wind them in. Get only Beru ZD9's from a website or Ford/motorcraft directly. Autolites will burn up and break off inside the head.
i have a block header but not sure it is working the plug as of about 3 days ago didnt feel warm where the ex cord and the heater cord connect like it did before. the ex cord has power i tested it a shop light. not sure about the three pronged plug on the heater cord like one thread said to test. should it jump start without the glow plugs working.
i was planning on going with motorcraft first i heard of beru. so i will research them. not to question your tips but to see with one is better and the cost. thanks for the replies everyone.
