oh bummer.
well,i hate to tell ya the bad news, but thats the bendix in the starter.
whoever repaired that starter didn't replace it.
its going to get worse and worse and then it will just stop engaging all together or worse-it will stick on and eat up the flywheel.
it needs to be replaced.
did your slip say what was to be done, and has been done to repair the starter?
i wouldn't go anywhere in the truck,or you could get stranded.you have the auto,so you couldn't even park on a hill in case.
your sure the starter is bolted up evenly and tight right?
did you take a look at the flywheel while you had it out,and at least check to see if there where any missing teeth in that section of the flywheel?
Well I had it stick on this morning. I turned the key off and she kept on crankin away. Luckily the motor didnt start. I turned the key back and forth twice and got her to quit
yikes, did you just find another item on the list of eternity!? haha, man bro, that sounds like the ignition but with other starter issues, i would take that thing back today!!!
taht thing is coming off as soon as I get home today. If theirs any spare change left, im going to look into a return line kit.
If I cant fix this for a decent price, then im afraid I'll have to sell the truck. I hate like hell to do it, but its getting to the point that its costing too much money. The ironic thing is, i've been trying to get her into better shape in anticipation of a job i've got comin up next week.......
I pulled the starter out today. Im definitly gettin better. Got it out in about 20 minutes instead of the hour and half it took the first time lol.
You guys were absolutly right. It was only partially engaging. The teeth on the gears are a little bit chipped, but i think theyll be ok.
ahh bummer.
this is what i was afraid of.
now you need:
new starter/or hopefully actually have it fixed at no charge.
and now you need a flywheel or your gunna damage the replacement starter again, and this time it would be your fault because you know its chewed up.
can you get another/more clear pic of that flywheel?
johnboggs21,
do you have another ride to get to your new job?
how solid is this truck as far as rust?
how is the trans shifting?
hows the engine power feel?
brakes/front end all tight or is she getting loose?
ideally, your rig is probably in need of around $1,000 in maintenance.
300k
so no doubt, she could use a fresh IP and injectors.
new starter.
new cables.
likely a coolant flush and trans flush.
hows the rubber,brakes/front end?
all things that need upkeep so your getting to your new job on time.
congrats on the new job! you got our support,to help ya make sure your rig will get ya there and back- least will try lol
Im hoping they will fix my starter for nothing, but i doubt it will be the case.
The damage to the flywheel is minimal. The pic makes it look worse than it really is. I can try for a better pic, but for now thats the best I can do.
I put on new brakes all around a while back. Frontend is getting a little loose, but not terrible. tires are good for quite a while yet.
Engine seems to have plenty of power, but I didnt own it when new, so I have nothing to compare it to. Tranny is working fine, seems to shift good.
As far as rust goes, the frame and whatnot are in good shape, but the body is not so much.
Unfortunately, i do not have anything else to drive for work. In short, if i need to spend 1k to make this thing road worthy, then itll have to go.........
If yall dont see me around for a while, you can assume i sold the ole truck.
John you paid them almost what a remaned, with a lifetime warranty, would cost to rebuild your starter and you don't think they'll warranty it? I certainly would find that unacceptable. Not to mention the damage their improperly repaired starter did. They should have tested it before giving back to you, did they? What does the paper work they gave you say about what was wrong and repaired? [No smiley appropriate to insert]

I assume they tested it before they gave it to me. Its a pretty good shop. Heres a pic i took of the receipt. Hard to really tell what is wrote there. And believe me, if they dont fix this problem, their will be some hell raised.
Well in shorthand I might see [ford starter remaned]. If so they didn't fix yours they gave you a rebuilt off the shelf. Take it back tomorrow and tell them what's wrong with it and what happened. You shouldn't be expected to pay to fix a rebuilt starter they just sold you.
John any reputable shop would have tested that starter before giving it back to you. And they would warranty the starter and most likely replace the damaged flywheel. You say these guys got a good reputation... well remind them that it's their reputation for quality that brought you to them in the first place. Chances are you will come out ok on this one.
