well starter is done. Everything was in good shape except that the bushing in the nose cone was completely gone, and something was going in the solenoid. Came to a grand total of $1.10.
You guys that replaced your cables, how much did the replacements cost?
i payed a lot of cabbage and went oversize on everything (3/0 positives and grounds w/ 4awg chassis grounds)and tinned marine grade cable, terminals, and lugs.i wouldn't advise this normally, but due to the mileage on mine,i figured it would be worth it.i'l never have to replace them as long as i own it.
around $300 total.this includes taking the wire i purchased at the local marine store to napa to have the lugs crimped.
this needs to be very dependable for my work.
if this was a standard daily driver,i would get regular cable,go with 4awg chassis grounds, but upgrade the passenger side bat,to starter cable to 3/0 AWG.heat shrink your ends.this would be much, much cheaper and still last many years.
i figured doing it this way tho, would be cheaper than replacing them twice.
ebay has good deals on cable, even tinned marine, but i dunno what brand the stuff is,or if its outer jacket is any good etc.etc.
i just made sure, when i go to turn that key,the major wires i need to count on will be good for as long as i run the rig.
it spins over really fast, and should never corrode.fast easy starts.
I wonder if their is a way to clean the corrosion out of my existing cables. any ideas?
well, if you cut open the outer sheath and see lots of green, dusty corrosion, they really should be replaced.at least if you want it reliable.
if it was just a yard truck for plowing or something, you might try cutting the cable open and let it sit in a bucket of cleaner or something.then use liquid tape to seal it back up i guess.
thing is,the starters are not cheap.so whatever you can do to help it spin quick and easy, and start, the longer it will last too.
if this is your daily driver/work rig,its worth new cables if their corroded.
but hey, when money is tight, theres no options.we all understand that.
cut 'em open an pour coke on 'em i bet would help considerably.just seal 'em back up when your done.
If you can't get new ones you can cut them back as far as the corrosion goes and soak them in baking soda and water you changeing them every few minutes and you may have to use a fresh mix a couple of times but it will eat the corrosion and turn it back to a bright copper color.
well do to a miscommunication, i had to pay $110 to get the starter back. Its almost in now. I gotta get that bitchy top bolt back in and hook up the positive cable to the solenoid. Doing this out in the snow sucks, but today is the warmest its been all week.
For 110 bucks that starter better turn that truck over like theirs no tomorrow. Do to that blow to my funding i dont think their are any battery cables in the works.

That's a pretty serious miscommunication from $1.10 to $110. Yea that top bolt. My fingers kept getting numb and it was challenge to get it started. Block heater might help with some heat. And my remaned cost about $150 w/ tax so you're still ahead.

i got my brand new bosch for 165 so no core or anything with a hassle attached. I do hate that friggin top bolt! Kind of like the oil pan issue, just not quite as stupid.

After you do a couple or hundred or tho they are not that bad, start the bottom bolts first and snug them just enough to hold the starter in place but not tight enough that you can't move it, now layiny under the truck with your head towards the radiator start the bolt with your left hand and move the starter with the right to free up the bolt. You can usually run the bolt up this way with your fingers.
