oh lol.i figured it was 110 dollars and you just made a typo.(notice the smiley in post 19)
yeah, labor and parts is not cheap these days.
sorry to hear you really thought you could have a diesel starter fixed for the price of a candy bar.
this is why keeping the cables clean(or replaced once in awhile) at all contact points and good gp's is important.
hope she works out good for ya.most replacement starters cost much, much more than 110,if that helps any.
also remember, like Dave reminds us often:
crank the starter for a max of 20 seconds and then stop.do don't crank again until at least 2 minutes has past.-this is important,or you'll slowly burn her up!(or if your unlucky,it wont be a slow thing at all.)
wow got her in and its a world of difference. I had it plugged in for about an hour and half while I was putting the starter in. I'm gonna let it cold soak overnight and see how she does tomorrow. Another thing I noticed is that the starter seems waaaay quieter now.

Hey a guy can hope cant he? lol
Another thing I noticed, is that i cant keep after it like i could before. Now it seems to kick out just as soon as the motor fires.
yea you can hear the starter still spinning, but its not engaged anymore. I aint started the truck in about a week and a half, so it was a little harder than usual, and the batterys were down some.
oh bummer.
well,i hate to tell ya the bad news, but thats the bendix in the starter.
whoever repaired that starter didn't replace it.
its going to get worse and worse and then it will just stop engaging all together or worse-it will stick on and eat up the flywheel.
it needs to be replaced.
did your slip say what was to be done, and has been done to repair the starter?
i wouldn't go anywhere in the truck,or you could get stranded.you have the auto,so you couldn't even park on a hill in case.
your sure the starter is bolted up evenly and tight right?
did you take a look at the flywheel while you had it out,and at least check to see if there where any missing teeth in that section of the flywheel?
shes bolted up good and tight, and i didnt see any missing or damaged teeth. I can tell the solenoid has been replaced and the big piece on the end. Dunno what its called but it looks expensive lol. Ill see if I cant get a video of what it does for yall so theirs no question. The shop i took it too has an excellent reputation.
If it disengages before you let off the key you have a problem most likely a weak bendix spring. It will eventually quit engaging but will likely damage the ring gear before it quits as it is only partially engaging.
that starter not working now to spec is exactly why i will never have one rebuilt, always new with those, and no i dont get remans either. I have always paid for the new ones. That bosch i bought was actually cheaper than the reman one and they were same brand.
yup.same here.iv never had any luck at all with salvage yard or reman starters.i dunno what gives.but i have learned to just buy new.i hate paying full price.but i hate being stranded more.
like in my case though, sometimes they are a better deal as the remans became so popular and jy's are getting good business. The one i got was on a clearnace deal. i asked if they had another new on in the back because i would have bought them out of stock! hahaha

Can i just replace the spring? How much work would it be?
another thing, is their some way i could not have it in right? It seemed pretty straitforward, but if their was a way to f*** it up im sure I woulda found it
If you've got it up to the shoulder and the bolts are tight.
Low voltage can cause it to not fully engage, but if it is spinning the engine properly I would think you have plenty of voltage to the starter.
I dunno, the batteries are kinda low from it sitting while the starter was out. Ill have to take it for a drive to town and back and let the batteries recharge and see if that makes it better.
