The 390 is one of the best engines Ford ever produced. Only 2 drawbacks to are 1) mileage, but what is lost in mileage is well made up for in power. 2)Non adjustable rockers.
Boy, you FE lovers won't give an inch. The 390 is good but a 460 is better. I never have liked the 360/390/427/428 because of the shaft rockers. The 302/351w/429/460's are better motors. Newer and more efficient design = more HP per cubic inch with less fuel consumption. The 351M/400 however make excellent boat anchors.

The man asked if the 390 is a good engine? He didn't ask if a 460 was a better engine. Aint no half ton pickup used for a daily driver better off with a stinking 460 in it, thats just horse hocky.
The FE was designed in the 50s, the windsors came later and are better designed, no doubt. He most likely has a truck set up for an FE, and wants to keep it.
I have been driving trucks with FEs in them since 65. While they aint perfect, they are damn good engines, and a good choice for trucks fron 65 to 76.

I'd rather drive a chevy than any late model 429-460 smoger! The 429-460 is a great engine as it was designed, but that was with a 10.5 to 1 comp. ratio. They are the worst gas hogs of all time with todays compression's. The FE is a much better design overall. Ever herd of anyone wanting a 460 over a 427?
I built a 400 that ate every 460 it cam up aginst. It seems that the 460 owners like to think that CI will save them and that tunning and engine is a lost art. Sorry for the unkind words, but my 400 took enough of my fleesh abd blood for me to have to love it. That dam engine could cause 360 even when the ground was dry.
