Ok here we go. I have a 97 ext cab diesel that I tow a travel trailer w/. When I hit the 4 way flashers w/ the trailer hooked up it "runs" thru the brake circuit and causes the electric trailer brakes to 'surge' w/ the flash of the 4 ways. Has anyone seperated the wiring from the flasher switch to the trailer harness so this does not happen and if so how? I've looked at the wiring diagrams but it just shows common wires since the brakes, turn signals and flashers energize the same filament on the bulb. Was thinking of running a seperate switch, flasher, wiring and diaode, but seems silly and complicated. By the way Happy New Year
The trailer brake controller gets input from the brake light circuit to activate the trailer brakes, which is where the connection between the 4-way flashers and the trailer brakes is made.
I have the Ford (vehicle end) 7 pin connector [pn F4TB-14A464AT], the Ford electric brake pigtail harness, and a Hopkins 'Brake Force' [pn 47225] under dash electric brake controller w/ LED indicators, increase/decrease wheel on side, and 'panic' switch on front. IDK what a time delayed or proportional brake controller are, sorry. I think EPNCSU2006 is right about the pulse preventer and at less than $20 I think I'll try it. My friend has the same set up on his Suburban and since his runs seperate turn & brake lights he doesn't have this problem. While using a test light and checking the 7 pin connector at the rear of truck the following happens: key on power to its pin, Park Lights to its pin, Rev to its pin, L turn to its pin, R turn to its pin, Brakes to L turn, R turn & Electric Brake pin. This is fine BUT when I turn on the 4 way flashers the power ONLY goes to the Electric Brake pin. Why? and will the pulse preventer solve this. The friends Sub sends ALL brake signals to the elec brake pin, & turn/flash signal to only turn pins. Thanks all.
Even a proportional brake controller will pulse if it is set to aggressively engage the brakes. Maybe not the latest and greatest controllers, but certainly on something like a Tekonsha Voyager.
This is fine BUT when I turn on the 4 way flashers the power ONLY goes to the Electric Brake pin.
That doesn't sound like it is working correctly. What happens if you unplug the brake controller and do the same checks? Are you using a digital multimeter to test the signals?
Using a test light. Actually not using anything right now just moving real slow after last night. Had a house full of friends and family till 3 am. Thanks for the site for trailer stuff. Later today I'll venture outside and check it out.
