2x4 to 4x4?

I ran across a 2000 4x4 X that is being sold for parts. Just for the heck of it, I was curious if anybody has ever converted a 2wd to a 4wd? and how hard it would be?

Thanks

It can be done, but to keep things simple, I'd look for one with a manual transfercase. ESOF is nice, but the work you have to do to put one in can be a challenge.

What's wrong with the 4x4? Can you just put your body on its frame?

Not a bad idea but it has a bad engine so it would be more than just changing the body. I wonder if it would be a problem with frame and body numbers not matching?

I would seriously doubt that they wouldn't match up perfectly.

What engine is in the donor 4x4?

I think his question is a VIN concern.

Yeah...I thought of that but he'd still have to make changes to the title/registration/insurance if he converts it to a 4x4.
