Another obstacle in the 64 Project- front leaf springs are in bad shape. I would prefer to have them repaired, since replacement is a little out of my budget right now.
My question is about having them re-arched. Is there a point when springs are beyond repair? How much does it usually cost? Or will I be better off saving up for replacements?
Also- my ford truck shop manual gives measurements for the correct arch on the springs. I assume this is an unladen measurement, but does anyone know for sure?
Thanks.

Your best bet is to find a local spring shop and pose them with your problem. Ive heard re-arched springs dont hold their arch long. Ask if they offer a garrantee on the re-arch, then compare the cost to having custom spring pacs built. I think you probably will go with new. The custom shop will probably be much cheeper than getting springs from an aftermarket parts supplier. Plus they will customize to your ride preferance. Let us know what you find.
I HAVE CONCIDERED DOING THE SAME THING WITH MY '79 F-250. THE FRONT LEFT SPRING IS WEAK. I HAVE TALKED TO THE SPRING SHOP IN MY AREA AND IT IS GOING TO COST ABOUT $320.00 FOR THE FRONT ALONE. I HAVE BEEN THINKING OF ASKING THEM TO RE-ARCH THEM 2" ABOVE SPECS. THE NEW ONES THAT I HAVE FOUND DID NOT HAVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF LEAFS AS THE ONES THAT I CURRENTLY HAVE.
My advise is to save up your money and get new springs. Rearching is only a temporary fix in my experience and it won't be long before you are back to were you started. The best way to evaluate spring heights is to put the truck on level ground and measure the body height all around according to the shop manual. Unloaded spring measurements don't always equate directly to ride heights.
The reason I need to know how to properly measure the arch of the springs is that I have a stripped chassis with springs on it. I would like to determine if they are useable, but obviously can't measure the laden arch- so how can I tell? The bad ones are obviously shot- the ends point toward the ground. The ones on the stripped chassis "look" good- but they aren't holding any weight.
Also- If I do have to go with new springs- which do I get? Thre are some with a 1000lb load rate, and some with a 1100lb load rate. Why the difference? Did it depend on which engine was used? Mine has the 292.
