Speedometer Erratic

You have an electronic speedometer and have no cable. There is a speed sensor somewhere,I think on the rear axle, could have a bad connection,or be bad itself,if that is not it,could be speedo itself is bad.I know my nephew changed rear ends and his truck started running like crap, but when he installed the original sensor in the rear end,it started running right. So,if it is that sensor,it may also not be feeding the computer the right signals. But don't start looking for a cable,I have a '96 and just changed the gauge cluster in it,that's how I know.

the speedometer does indeed read off a sensor on the rear axle, located at the top. two bolts hold it down. its like a magnetic pick up with a tone ring on the carrier. sometimes the pick up (sensor) gets polluted with metal debris from the axle. i would try cleaning it first and see. u can also try replacing it. it that doesnt help, it very well may lie in the PCM.

Hi guys! Thank again for those replies! I went to pull a speedo/odo module from a junk yard today, installed it in...and Bingo...It's again working normally. But this 0ne I got is 42500 miles more than the odo reading of my broken one!!! Is there anyway to reprogram it to equal the actual mileage of my toy!!! I know there's a lot of brilliant F150 owners/enthusiasts who can help me with this...More power to everyone..Happy New Year..Am very glad I was a part of this forum..

We are glad your here! If you do a search on here,I think someone had something about putting your old chip in,but I'm not sure.If your storing your old one, keep it upright as I know some of the gauges are oil filled to dampen them.It might take a lot of looking, but try searching "odometer" and "gauge cluster",here and on the F150 AND LARGER FORUM for your year span.
