04 5.4L SCREW Erratic Speedometer

Hello everyone,

I have an 04 5.4L SCREW Erratic Speedometer.

Most of the time it works, some of the time it bounces or doesn't read at all.

Has anyone else experienced this exact thing and what did you find out?

Thank you,

Dave

I had similar problem with tach. Try opening the IC and moving the gauge motor on the contacts. I posted so you can search on my name.

Mine does not come on and off when banging on it like yours did. I assume these do not have a cable. I wonder if it can be a fuse just for the speedometer and maybe the fuse is intermittent and not just burned out? LoL

The speedometer is completely internally controlled by the instrument cluster based on a CAN Bus data signal from the PCM. If the the speedometer is the only problem you are having with the IC, it would sound to me like a problem inside the IC (connection between the IC's microprocessor and the speedometer's stepper motor, solder joints have been issues on other Ford IC's), as I believe a CAN communication issue would cause the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp/Check Engine Light) to illuminate.

So you are saying that this has no Speed Sensor anywhere which provides that signal to the PCM?

If not, what is this?

yes, the sensor reports the vehicle speed to the PCM, but, if the signal to the PCM was erratic, I would expect to see drive ability concerns and/or a P0500 code. cracked solder joints in the IC are way more common, but if you want to know for sure if the VSS signal is good, you can use a scan tool to monitor the VSS PID while the speedometer is acting up.
