I have a 2000 Ranger 4x4. Problem started after I noticed that the speedodometer fluctuated when i touched the brake pedal. The ABS light then came on and then the speedometer went to 0 MPH. The speed reading comes and goes. When it drops to 0, the transmission drops to a neutral position (between 2 & drive I think) and then hard shifts back to drive. I replaced the ABS sensor in the rear end but problem remains unchanged. Anyone have any idea where to look next. Summary of problems:
Speedometer is very erratic
Drops out of Drive
Hard shift to Drive
ABS light comes and goes
Without a codes being pulled, sounds like a good candidate for the speed sensor on the rear axle failing. Good news is that its cheap and easy to do....meaning like 15minutes and $15.
The following thread has a discussion about this as well as a how to near the end. There are part numbers and tools listed.
I dont believe you can have autozone or those type places pull the codes for this (its either part of the brake or trans system and not part of most normal code readers ablities). So its up to you. You can try throwing the part at it or try to find somewhere that can pull the codes for you. Let us know what you come up with.
I agree with mfp4073, it sounds like the rear speed sensors PID is corrupt.
The computer, tranny, ABS system, speed-o & cruise control use it's PID output to do their thing & you've mentioned having problems with 3 of those, so the speed sensor, it's wiring & electrcal connector belong high on your suspect list.
If you have a scantool that'll read PID's, you can monitor the speed-o's PID while driving, for confirmation that it's corrupt.
It's located atop the front center of the rear differential.
One 10mm fastner, electrical connector & "O" ring seal hold it in.
Lube the new sensors "O" ring before installation & if needed dielectric grease for the electrical connector & torque the 10mm fastner to 25-29 ft/lbs.
More thoughts for consideration.
Let us know how it goes.
