It was very interesting to learn how the high idle works over the last couple of weeks, I didn't even know my truck had one. Well, it does'nt work anyways, and I haven't taken the time to see whats wrong with it yet. But I was thinking about it yesterday and why could'nt a guy just take a hot wire and hook it to the high idle solenoid with a toggle switch in the dash? That way I wouldn't have to worry about the temp senser, and I could turn it on when ever I felt like it.
You can I've had my wrecker rigged like that for years.
Thanks starmilt, if I have tomorrow off I'll monkey around with it. First thing I'll do is test the selenoid by running a hot jumper wire to it, and if the selenoid is still functional I'll hood up the toggle and see what happens. Any hot wire should do eh?
Ya, tap into something that has "key-on" power.
I was going to wire mine up like with a toggle because it wasn't working but I found the temp sensor was unplugged. Plugged it in and now it works great, along with my cold advance
There has been several members claim their rig starts easier with the cold start advance unplugged, I have tried this and not noticed any difference in the way it starts, but I would not put it on a toggle as I see no advantage in it running longer.

Mine was the same way when I bought mine plugged the sensor back in and it works fine its real common for the sensors to ge unplugged because of there location.

10-4. I was thinking about turning it off manually after start up on warm days.
My uncle has a high idle switch on his 1971 Mustang Mach I, he needs it cause he has it idling so low, when it's cold it stalls lol
I've thaught of doing that to my 7.3 if the high idle ever stops working.
sounds like he has a lopey cam.they idle real choppy and sound cool.very distinctive.sounds like its about to stall at times, along with the rumbley cool sound.good idea he has there for cold weather.hope he's not driving that beauty in the snow lol (no worries,no ones that crazy to drive a classic in harsh weather.)

Yeah I think that's what hes got, a lopey cam. Does sound amazing, idles really choppey and farts and always sounds like it's gonna stall lol love that sound The Mustang is his summer car.
His winter beater is a 1985 Ford Crown Victoria 351.
He also has a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am with a modified 400 making 435HP with a 4 speed!
I remember 2 summers ago, he gave me a ride in it, he putted a 100 dollar bill on the dash, and he said when I say "GO" try and reach for it haha pedal to the floor and I had trouble moving my arm forward, the massive G force that car gives ya is unbelievable!!
