I have read some threads and people mention painting the interior door panels., etc..... Can someone please explain? Is this how the panels were colored back in the day? If I need replacement panels do the come in colors
THere is a spray dye from SEM that is supposed to be really good stuff for painting the door panels and vinyl and plastic parts. I haven't treid it but I will be doing it once the weather warms up this spring. I've read on here to stay away from the cheap duplicolor or krylon stuff for this particular job and to go with SEM. They have a vinyl and plastic prep that helps to clean it up. As with any painting job prep is the most important for good results.
Ford door panels came solid colored plastic. But finding used ones in matching colors can be a problem. I've used the "vinyl dyes" in spray cans with pretty good luck. But they work best on panels that don't get much wear. Dash pads do well but if you drive with your arm hanging out the window all the time, you'll rub the top of the door panel wearing through before very long.
I've noticed a lot of older GM interior stuff was black plastic with a coat of paint from the factory. And so when Chevy truck guys order those same pieces new they can take it for granted will also be needing a can of paint/dye.
if you look at the projects sticky at the top of the forum, under interior they have a thread labeled extreme makeover, Em's Cab Edition. she uses the SEM products, hers turned out well. look through that for some idea as to what you could expect with proper prep. if you want perfect and long lasting, look for replacements. places like LMC truck sell them in the correct colors.

That was an awesome read. She should have her own show on the Speed Channel. It could replace "Unique Whips" , so I wouldn't barf and hafta change the channel in that time slot.
