03ps, You can put late model 5 spd. behind it, but the 65 is a 240 and it has no *****, so the OD will bring it to it's knees. Besides that they require a juice clutch that the 65 doesn't have.
While the idea is good, the solution may not be. IMHO
Well every time I have responded to something I get told it does not work, but here we go. I have 65 upgraded to a 300 with a t-5 out of A 5.0 mustang. It uses stock cluth linkage. Truck was originally 3on the tree. Had ta buld an adaptor to make the bellhousing deeper(the t-5 has a longer input shaft). As for power, it has plenty.
Hey Smokin' Joe, what rear end gearing are you running with that T5 set up? some nay sayers have said the T5 won't pull a F100's weight but I also have the 300 and think it would be just fine.
Oh yeah, that 300 is way better than a 240. Even though they are supposed to be the same block, I always felt that the 240 was a dog. T-5 tranny is supposed to be a great was to go if you don't mind fabricating a bit. I just kept my 3 speed for now, as I don't really plan on using it for much highway driving (when I get it done), just for cruising.
I don't know what gear ratio it is. I would guess somewhere around 411. The tag was gone when I got the truck and have never done the research to find out.
As to wether it will pull the weight of the pickup, I bought this truck from a friend who did the conversion about ten years ago. He never had any problems w/it. I have had the truck for three years( I just got it back on the road w/new paint) and it does very well (smokes the tires in three gears and does over 100 mph in 4th).
Another choice is a Tremec TKO 500/600 with the forward tower option and a aftermarket lakewood or speedway bell housing.
All 61 to 66 firewalls have a stamping for hydraulic a clutch master cylinder. It is fairly easy to set up a juice clutch with a internal bell unit or a slave cylinder.

Hey Dave, You have been MIA for a while, are you OK?
I need updated contact info for you, you can email me if you like.
I looked up the weight difference of a 1990 5.0 Mustang Vs a 1966 F100 shortbed and there is roughly a 400 to 500 lb weight difference, it would appear that a T5 five speed transmission would not be over taxed and have enough strength to pull the weight of the F100.
