3 on the tree to 4 on the floor?

I have a 1974 F100 360. The 3 on the tree is dead. The shifter linkage is unrepairable. I want to convert to a four speed on the floor. Is this an easy swap out? Will the drive line be the same length with the four speed?I tried an after market shifter that is made for the three speed. It is really bad news. Any suggestions ? What year four speed will match with my drive line and flywheel/clutch?

Jason, I don't know if you are looking for a 4 speed like the ones in the cars. The truck 4 speeds are still 3 speeds with a granny low, that is hardly ever used, and it doesn't shift as well either. IMHO

If the floor shifter is properly installed it will work OK. May not make you happy, but it'll work OK.

A car 4 speed is not the same length. Even the shorter Mustang 4 speeds are longer than your truck 3 speed. It can be done though. You will have to get a custom driveshaft made. There are different transmission/bellhousing combos. You need to makkke sure you get a workable setup. I am doing the same thing, except changing to a 428 also. I have many projects at this time, so I'm slow about getting this one done. My engine is finished and the trans is sitting there ready to go. Maybe in a few months. Pete

Why is your's "unrepairable"? If your main reason for the conversion is to avoid having to address the 3spd shifting linkage then you may want to reconsider because you'll probably spend more time in the long run and perhaps create other issues (read that as $$) such as clutch, pressure plate, driveshaft and so on. All you may really need to do is find a suitable donor truck with a good shifter set-up on the column and the linkages. On the other hand, if you want a 4-spd then I say go for it!

Not true. The swap is relatively easy if you can find a tranny from a similar vehicle. I have a 74 F100 4X4 and also the factory chassis manual (son-in-law works for Ford!) The New Process 4 speed has the compound low but they also used a Muncie standard 4 speed. The tail shafts and housings are the same. Even if you use a slightly different tranny it isn't that difficult to change the shaft and housing. The clutch, flywheel, linkage is all the same. The truck 4 speeds (4 different types) are all floor shifts. Hey, I like the compound low for 4 wheel drive. That's a tree climber!!!
