a while back i bought a 390GT for 150 bucks.
it ran but needed to be rebuilt..also in the deal i got another 390 (1976 truck) and a rebuilt c6 tranny.
the Gt was in a 67 fairlane...the truck 390 its gonna stay that application....dont know what to do with the GT...its been bored 30 over....
any ideas?
Someone with a Mustang,Cougar,Ranchero,Fairlane....who would like to swap out their 289,302 for a 390 but need the GT heads to clear their shock towers. In studying my FE book, it seems that aside from the exhaust manifold holes being different, that their isn't any difference in port size or combustion chamber CC's from most other FE heads except the HiPo 352,390 from the early 60's, the 406,427's and 428CJ,SCJ. I had GT heads on the 390 in my 69 truck and ended up trading them toward freshly rebuilt "normal" castings. The GT manifold on the drivers side, crammed the exiting pipe up against the clutch rod. My performance store is telling me that 390 cranks are getting harder to come by. They have a pile of 360's but no 390's. $150 seems like a good price if you have a good core. Trade/sell the heads for something you need and use the shortblock as a backup core to build while you run the one you have in your truck. My poking around for a "good" used 390 in my area junk yards has them in the range of $500-650 for 390w/C6.
i do have the heads with the different exhaust pattern but its the bottom end that makes a GT a GT
the rods are twice the size of the regular 390's rods.
plus i've found a 3x2bbl for it.
I didn’t know there was anything special about the 390GT rods, thought they were the same as the “short” rods used in the plain 390, 410 and 428 engines. The next step up in performance was the 390HP & PI rods with a wider shank and 13/32” rod bolts. I believe they were also used in the 427 hydraulic and 428CJ engines. A third rod made was identical to it but used the smaller 3/8” bolts. Is this the rod they used in the 390GT? After that came the capscrew rod used in the 427MR and 428SCJ.
no they are bigger fatter...i have both a regular and a gt...unless its just the 67 -76 difference
i've found a home for it now so everything is good. i'm gonna drop it in a maverick...first put a fox chassiz under the mav....
o.k. how much do you have invested in the motor? we can talk shipping, handling, and TAXES?!?! later. geee aint this fun. i bet my 71 would scream with that under the hood.. mocky
