Oops, I did it again
OK I admit it. Single. This truck looks like it has the potential to get some decent gas mileage between the OD gear and the 2:75. So far the problems are:
- A leaking heater core. OK so long as it's off. I asked at an auto parts store about replacing and they asked whether I have a high output heater or not. Does it matter what goes in?
What's the difference? Both my other pickups have no trouble keeping me warm.
- The rear end appears to have a lot of backlash. I can rotate the driveline against it yet the U-joints appear tight.
-It appears to have a leak where the powerbrake booster meets the mastercylinder.
-The engine seems to hesitate when reaching cruising speed in 3rd gear and backing off the gas. I'm thinking that perhaps there is a vaccuum leak related to the brake booster. I drove it real late last night when it was very cold out, and when idleing down while braking, the engine was dying.
-Endplay on the waterpump pulley-and bearing noise from one of the accesories. I haven't gotten a listening stick out there yet, but it sounds like maybe the alternator. The waterpump pulley does wobble a little, and you can pull it in and out a little. I have a brand new smallblock water pump in the bed of my dead truck. And I have a couple of good alternators.
-The second gear syncro doesn't work so good.
Does anybody know the gear ratios of the 4spOD manual? Is 3rd gear 1:1? I suspect my speedo is 5-10mph off and if I know that 3rd is 1:1` and I hook up a tach I can confirm. Also will this tranny bolt into a FE bellhousing? I know this tranny came on M block's as well as 300-302. I test drove a 400 with one last year. According to my Haynes manual this tranny was introduced in 78.
