Looking for info on the diffrence between the 390 & the 390 GT motor.
I have a 390 in my 75 short box, was told it was the GT motor.

trailer pullin' engine

Zulu, the GT engine had a slightly better cam IIRC. It really isn't any better of a starting point for a build than any other 390. But it isn't a bad starting point either. Trailer pulling can be hard on an engine. The right gearing can help alot. What tranny are you planning on ? Tell us how much money you can spend and we'l help you choose the parts. Strokers are great if you have the bucks, but a 390 can do it if you build it right. DF, @ his Dad's house

I have a 67 GT 390 in my 66 F-100 4x4, it's a great engine for this truck. On the GT engine the heads, that is the exhaust manifiols were bolted on crossways, and the normal 390 bolts up and down. The stock 390 was normally 300 hp and the GT was 335hp. The only changes on my engine was a AFB carb and a set of headers.

That "GT" motor in your truck must have undergone a rebuild as the truck motors didn't run the compression the car engines had....

IF you have 4.10 gears, you should be good to go... but what size tires are you running?

I put together an 11:1 390 with big lopey cam, 4bbl, Holley 750, etc.

With 2 tons (yea, 4000lbs!) in the bed, it hardly knew it was back there.

If you're building a mild setup, it should pull pretty decent. With the 4-speed, I'm assuming it's a 435NP. With that much weight, you'll probably have to start in granny-1st just to get rolling, but once it's rolling that 390 should pull pretty well.
