Video on how to fix the rear door

Did you get your door to work long term? I wouldn't think the zip tie would work long term, but it is worth a try.

I had the same problem with my upper latch on both doors about a week apart. Turned out to be a broken cable housing end on both of them. Very very very common problem. Here are some videos I made about how to fix it without going to the stealership.

Fix broken cable with bicycle brake adjuster - ford car truck van door won't open - stuck latch youtu.be/7Ta7yx26qwM
How to remove Ford rear door panels with/while door stuck shut: youtu.be/3tAdn3vXZqg
How to open stuck truck, van, or car door latch with broken cable: youtu.be/yfeQGMvsoSg
Broken cable housing repair (Extras): youtu.be/Xi1js3_RebQ

This is the old video I did showing how to fix it with a piece of plastic tubing, but the bike cable adjuster is much better. Or you can just buy one of the kits.

Great video. Thanks for posting it.

Yes I got mine fixed....again. It had broken at the actuator mecanism in the center of the door exactly as the video showed about 3 years ago. I secured it with project nails but it would break about once a year. A few month ago I fixed it again but this time I used the zip tie approach and then used some project nails on the zip tie. If it breaks again I'll try this new approach shown in thew video.

You can find a repair kit here a lot cheaper than replacing all the cables. The cables are currently 172 bucks at my local dealer! What a ripoff! Door Handle Cable Repair Kit for Ford Vans | eBay They work for Rangers, truck and vans.

Zip Tie X2

I did this quick fix ... does require putting a hole in door. If get the right tension on the zip ties, then the cable will not touch metal housing.

Great Fix

Then you identify either of the offending cables, pull it sleeve and all to get the door open. Then once your in a more comfortable position you drill two 1/4" holes in the slope of the door just under the window directly above the cable end where it attaches to the mechanism. From these holes you string a better quality zip tie through and around the cable. This strap can be tightened in small increments pulling the sleeve of the cable up until you get the door handle functioning again. You have to work the door open and closed a few times to let the cable and zip tie find their final resting positions. WD 40 helps the zip tie center up on the cable. This fixes the top cable. For the bottom cable you simply secure the sleeve to the bottom of the door somewhere that will keep the sleeve in alignment and maintain the tension on it. This fix works pretty well and is permanent. I'm sure my zip tie will last longer than the end pieces of the cable sleeves that broke off especially since I used the ones with the metal latching zip. I had both doors do this and I wish I had taken a picture of the fix. PEOPLE!! Please don't buy new cables unless there is some kinda major new engineering design they offer. This fix will outlast new cables by a decade I'm sure.
Just tried this fix and it worked perfectly, so glad I came here first. Ya'll just saved me 72 bucks!

cable fell off!

I have the same problem, I was able to remove the door panels locate the problem and I was prepared to fix it, but it got dark so I decided to wait till morning to complete the repair. I closed up the truck with the cables exposed and ready to start this morning.
This morning when I tried to open the rear doors, the top latch cable came completely off from the top latch itself. I have tried prying with a flat blade screw driver with no luck, anyone know how to open the door without the cable attached?

I used the replacement Ferrules that go over the ends of the original cable. Saved lots of money!

I updated an older post above with these links, but just in case someone skips to the end....
Here are some videos I made of how to fix one of the cable ends for a few bucks each using a metal bicycle cable adjuster. Also some other related videos.
