The water pump is about the only interchangeable part you mentioned. No on the intake, no on the distributor, Probably not on the Heads. Exhaust manifolds will, oil pan won't.
I have 85 302/351W heads (interchangable in this era except for head bolt diameter) The emmissions AIR was plugged off and it didn't really present a problem. You could have a machine shop plug it with dowel rod if you really are worried about that, I wouldn't worry about plugging those holes, just do it with the proper plug so that you don't have a nasty exhaust leak.
Thanks for the help. I think I will start putting the 351W back together and just plug the hole in the heads, since you didn't have any problems with it. Hopefully the 289 can hold out for a little while longer until I get it put back together. Is it possible/will it work to find and earlier distributor with points that will drop in? Sorry for all the dumb questions, but I have never switched back and forth from older engines, that are straight forward to me, to the years that begin to have electronics, emissions, and pointless distributors. Thanks again for your time and responses,
The last car I put points in was over 15 yrs ago in my 66 Porsche 912. Two of my trucks have the Factory Ford Duraspark Electronic module and I converted my 69 (390) to Crane's FireBall XR700 points to electronic ignition conversion. This involves retrofiting an optical sensor into the distributor and then pretty simple wiring. 351W distributors don't interchange with anything else. 351C,351M,400,429,460 interchange and 221,260,289,302,255 interchange but 351W is unique. You'd have to find an early one (pre 74) or convert to electronic ignition.
I really do appreciate your help. I dug through my parts boxes this evening and found the pointless distributor that I came with the 351W. Thanks for the advice. I will check into the unit you spoke of since the wiring was fairly easy. After rewiring the majority of the truck, I am begining to at least understand some of the basics. Will there be any additional components I will need that you can think of? Thanks again,
