These romp threads never cease to intrigue me, with all the different variations of symptoms and results of oil type and/or mechanical mods. Now, having seen Dans link to the multitude of PCM calibrations, it makes me wonder if my HPX is just masking an issue.
They all have differences in some way or another.
When I went to Bill to buy the chip for my truck, I asked him about buying some of Bfife's live tunes and Bill told me that they wouldn't work for my truck because the software was too different and they are not compatible.
Bfife's truck is a little bit newer F550 4x4 ZF6 than my 1999.5 F550 4x4 ZF6 truck.
Interesting. I wonder if those WARM WTR and COLD WTR things have something to do with it. Perhaps the programing is geared towards different geological locations. When the trucks are moved to colder climates that were programmed and sent to warmer climates, they suck.
The problem is most likely caused by the HEIU injectors not receiving enough oil pressure to actuate the injectors when cold. Therefore the answer is going to be a lower viscosity oil like 5w-XX.
Don't confuse synthetic vs. dino in the solution (it doesn't matter, just as long as it is a 5w, although I haven't seen a 5w dino).
When it comes to viscosity, there's no evidence that Rotella is any different than Delo. Rotella is the most popular because people get it cheap at Walmart.
You can also cycle the glow plugs a few times and see if that helps.
