This last weekend I took the truck to a bit of a cold area (Bend,OR) however most of you would say that this is not cold - it was in the mid 20's for a few days. The truck sat for 2 days and when I started (it was not plugged in) it would only romp and die. What is the correct way to get it started? I was able to barely apply the gas when it was romping and it recovered and started to idle itself but is this the right thing to do? I am running Delo.
Try allowing the glow plugs to heat up at least a minute or so before trying to start. And yes, a tap on the accelerator pedal usually will stop the romps. Ever since I made the switch to 5w-40 though, my truck has never romped again.
Why **** away money on oil... 15/40 year round. Starts find at 0*... Just turn the key on, count to 30 and start.
The wait to start light has nothing to do with the glow plugs.
The only thing it costs is a little time and an extra $12 for a filter. I change my 15/40 every 5K miles and I changed synthetic (when I used it) every 10K miles. The synthetic costs twice as much and I changed it 1/2 as often. Except for the 1/2 hour in my driveway and the filter cost it was a push.
The only reason I use dino is that for some reason my truck seems to like the Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40. Plus my wife seems to be more accepting of $75 every 2 months instead of $150 every 4 months.
Thank you fellas for all the information, it is appreciated. I did try Rotella a while back and honestly I have only experienced the ROMPS twice. Once after using Rotella (it wasn't that cold) and then I changed back to Delo and experienced it when it was cold (only24-28 or so). That's not cold to some of you. I will consider changing the oil and give it a shot, thank you.
if it's cold and I aint plugged my truck in i'll turn the key on for 30 seconds or so, turn it off, and repeat. helps mine start easier. just something that works for me
this is true. wanna hear the epitome of what a cold diesel sounds like? start a 6.0 stroker in -15 that aint been plugged in. thought my old truck was gonna throw the engine out of the hood on a couple occaisions
