I would have liked to do the headers but didn't have the extra funds for them. The exhaust studs would have been a good idea but they never crossed my mind. I did put in a new clutch, heater core, water pump, fuel pump, tensioner, COP's, block heater and lots of other little things here and there. Got all the leaks fixed near the t-case and rear diff. (Transfer case bolts were loose, and the shop owner said that he has seen quite a few SD's come in with leaks near the t-case, and they were all from loose bolts, FYI)
All said and done I spent about $5800, so a header upgrade was not an option. I did buy a tune from 5star tuning but will wait a few days before installing it.
Damn, I wish I would have thought about the exhaust studs, but oh well. If there would have been a problem with the ones I had then I am sure they would have been replaced.
I suppose that's life, but damn she is running good right now and it drives ten times better than it ever has.
Is it really that difficult to change the old studs at this point with the new engine in? I am sure it would be much more difficult in the vehicle, but it can be done I am sure. Anybody got suggestions if i decide to do that someday?
if you just installed em into the new motor im sure NOW is the time to change em, before they get stuck in the heads and start breaking off over time...
lots of guys on the site have changed theirs in teh truck, so its def possible.
Well, maybe I'll get some tomorrow and get them started. Maybe I'll wait till the weather is nicer in a few months. Who knows, maybe I should just wait until I get some headers to put on or until a few of them actually break. I dunno, we'll see.
The studs can easily be replaced with the motor in the truck by removing the fender liners. The PIA part comes when the studs break when you remove them and you have to get them out somehow. Much easier to deal with broken studs with the engine out of the truck.
