I have a 92 f150,5.0,and sometimes it will flood at idle, the engine will surge up and down, and you can smell fuel, but driving under a load such as a hill it bogs down, until you kick it down a gear..Also if you run it hard it will backfire..No check engine light, and stored codes are random..Did a fuel pump check, when you engage the pump pressure comes to about 35 psi,but as soon as the pump disengages, pressure goes to 0.when you crank the engine, pressure returns and engine will start after cranking several times, once started,it maintains 30-32 psi, when you kill the engine pressure goes to zero..Heres a list of replaced parts. Egr valve, throttle postion sensor, engine coolant temp sensor, idle air control valve, fuel pressure reg(replaced by ford under recall 2 weeks ago, also put in a check valve..)plugs,wires,cap,button..I am at a stand still..I would appreciate any help.........
The fuel pressure should not drop off that quickly after the fuel pump
shuts off.
Pull off the vacuum hose that goes to the fuel pressure regulator.
There shuld be no gas in the line. If there is, that would indicate the
regulator is bad even though you said it was replaced.
Otherwise it would appear one of the injectors is leaking which is causing
the fuel pressure to drop off that quickly.
I agree with Conanski, but would add that if the injectors are quite old (or original) even if it's not an injector problem, go ahead and replace them all anyway. It really livened up my truck and gave it a lot more pep.
How's the fuel mileage? A stuck injector should be sucking down fuel like crazy.
About the recall, yes there is a factory recall on the 92,try flmowner.com and have your vin #. I just called my local dealer gave them the vin and they told me to bring it in..They replaced the regulator and installed a check valve somewhere in the fuel line system.
About the regulator, two weeks prior to finding the recall info,I replaced the regulator with one bought from autozone, it changed nothing. But I decided the motorcraft version was probably superior in quality,so I let ford replace it with their version..It was free and they kept my new/old one for me so now I have a spare...
If a injector is stuck open wouldn't it idle bad all the time? Sometimes it idles decent, but sometimes its high,or surges up and down. I guess the injector theory would explain the backfiring when you get on it hard...I appreciate you guys helping me out here, I am still a novice on these computer controlled engines..
