I figured for what I want to use it for $75 is a steal as the heads and block would be about the only thing I used anyway if I bought a complete motor since I am thinking stroker. sure I will have tons of ?'s for this build though
D3 heads are ok, but as I pointed out, they are not rare, or super desirable. As was pointed out, D0 heads are the ones everyone wants. C9VE heads are great as well, I have been told they are the same as D0 heads. If you are having to rebuild the motor to start with, I don’t think $75 is a swinging deal. You can buy whole cars around here for not much more than that, with 460’s that need rebuilt. You then have the valve covers, distributer, timing cover and a ton of other parts you will need. Depending on what you are putting the engine in, you might even have the oil pan.
I am not trying to be an A hole either, just expressing my point of view. Check out the 460 forum on this site as well.
I'm running C9VE heads on my truck. They are better than the D0VE heads, they are the same except you don't have the termactor bumps to deal with. The reason the D0VE heads have the reputation is because C9VE does not spell a word. lol.
$75 sounds like a good deal to me. I paid $200 for a complete 460. I planned on dropping it in, as is and running it but one thing lead to another. I ended up just using the block, crank, rods, timing cover. I got a different oil pan, pistons, heads, intake etc. The heads on my engine were D2VE which are about the worst head ever. They are a total open chamber and like 115cc head. Horrible. But the silver lining there is that the valves in the D2's are the same from 1968 to 1972 and I'm running the C9 heads which I bought bare. So I was able to use the D2 valves in my C9 heads which saved me a bunch of money. I also have some D3 heads which has shorter valves than the earlier heads because the chamber is larger.
I think the only things it would really to be nice to have that I'm unsure of it comes with would be the valve covers and timing cover. sure I would be changing dist. setup and upgrading to a performance intake. motor will be going in a 77 f-250 4x4 so most would require a new pan also. This is just gonna be a build over time project and will continue to run the 400 until I get it done

If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:
Ignition Lesson of the Month: Hystereses, the difference between the timing as the rpm and vacuum increases to the timing as rpm and vacuum decrease, needs to be kept to a minimum. A precise advance curve accomplishes this.
