automatic hub removal

I don't know if this is where I should be posting this but I'm trying it. I put it on the diesel forum I'm usually on but thought I better try another area too.

I was wondering if anyone knows how to get the wheel retainer nut loose on the auto hub. I got the key off and broke it of course, so I either have to try and find a used one somewhere or buy new lockouts. Anyway I have to get the nut off no matter what I do. I can't tell how you loosen it being round with just one notch on the top out of it.

Thanks for any advice

Is this for the truck in your signature? If so, forget about the single notch on top. That is your spindle. If all auto's are the same there is a nut with a few flat spots on it. Very hard to see unless you clean out the hubs with some brake cleaner. I actually did not see the flat spots till I got it off. What I did was use a screwdriver and tapped it loose. There are little notches next to the threads of the spindle. Perfect for the screwdriver to bite on

Screwdriver is what I always use. There should be little notches.

There is also a socket you can buy for it.

Sorry this is for my 97. I didn't see any notches or flat spots.

Just to be clear and I think you guys understand me, but the lock and nut are right behind the cam assembly and looked like it is round w/ threads on in?

I'm going to the shop this morning and will see what I come up with.

The newer auto hubs have a special locknut to hold the bearings in place, uses 1 nut in place of the 2 like on the dana 44. You NEED the special socket to get this nut off.

I suppose that is the 6 pronged socked to fit in the holes in the piece behind the nut?

That is exactly right and I got it off just now. I was going about it wrong and feel like a complete idiot. Thanks for the help though. Now I need a new nut and lock key for it means I was an idiot in removal process. Live and learn I guess. Any advice where to find a new nut and lock key???

Thanks a bunch for the help

Man that little thing kicked my but when I did mine. I kept looking at it thinking there was no way there is a 1 tang tool. In my defence it was real late in the morning. Anyways I tried using a D44 socket in there sideways with no luck so I went with the screwdriver/hammer technique on that one notch. When it broke I new for sure that notch had nothing to do with the locknut, that was the spindle notch. I should have cleaned it out with some brake cleaner before I tried. Might have seen the flatspots. Oh well, that's how you learn. There have been quite a few threads lately about that locknut. Has gotten some of the best stumped.

I have no clue where to get new ones. sorry I can't help with that. Might want to convert to manual though

I did the same thing. Realizing that notch is now the spindle!! Didn't screw it up bad though, was able to clean it up and should be fine.

Took the other side completely apart in 15 minutes or so after I knew what I was doing for sure!

I think that the best answer for a replacement it just take it to a part store and tell them what it is, i'm sure they can find you a new one.
