I am rebuilding a 1970 F100 SWB. I am putting a 1981 351W in it. I have the original C4 transmission off a 240 6 cyl and I have a Cruise-O-Matic (FMX) off another 351W. The bell housings look the same. Any good advise which transmission I should rebuild and use? Thanks in advance.
I am not aware of any difference between a C4 for a six or a V8. The FMX doesn't seem to have much of a following whereas the C4 is a smaller unit, lighter and can be modified if needed. I would vote for the C4 with a shift kit; it can handle the 351.
I agree with Lee, the C4 is a good trans, however I would recommend you install a heavy duty rebuild kit along with the shift improver and the C4 should last forever.
I just read a column in Mustang Monthly in which someone was looking for a modification kit for a FMX; the magazine said that they didn't know of anything available. Hopefully you have gone with the C4.
I am running a rebuilt(with a shift kit) '76 C4 behind a warmed up '70 351W.. no problems so far in the 5 years and various engines I have used it with...
