I recently did a body swap of an '82 Ford F-150 onto a '81 F250. What I have left is a bear truck chassis with a 351W and an automatic transmission sitting on the old 82 f150 frame. Does anyone no what kind of transmission it is? If it is an AOD I want to have it rebuild and use it in a '56 f100 build up that i'm doing. Also i can rob the flywheel off of it too. I have a rebuilt 351W sitting on the engine stand right now. Thanks for your help.

I am not overly sure on this but I think it is a C6 tranny. If you can get the numbers off the tranny call ford or a dealer, and go from there. The C6 was used on the ford big blocks until later in the 80's. Like I said I'm not sure but this should get you in a better direction I hope. Good luck and good day.

LAST EDITED ON 01-Nov-01 AT 09:14 AM (EST)[p]351W isn't a big block, but it probably is a C6 tranny. That was the most common. Something that may show, but not sure. If it is the E4OD, or AOD, it's got overdrive. Simply check above the steering column on your shift indicator on that truck. If it had P, R, N, D, OD, 2, 1, then it's probably the E4OD or AOD. If it just had P, R, D, 2, 1, it's more than likely the C6. I'm sure alot of people will disagree or say that's not the right way to tell, but it does give you an idea what your dealing with.

So then if that is the original tranny that came with the truck, you have overdrive. And as I undersatnd it, the C6 didn't have overdrive. Only the AOD and the E4OD, so you probably have one of those...most likely the AOD...I believe the E4OD was a newer overdrive tranny put in trucks after 1986, though I could be wrong...I'm just guessing.
