Any thoughts on checking for other worn parts? These newer trucks don't have kingpins, just ball joints right? I've heard before that you just jack up the truck and bounce the wheel up & down, in/out and look for play. For me, it's hard to check while moving it.. (guess I can't multitask). I'm afraid I might miss it. When in doubt, just replace it, I always say!
Thanks for the help with the VIN code. Nothing in there about the type of diff. Oh well, I'm sure it's tagged.
The differential will have a tag on it. Just wipe it off so you can read it. To check for the ball joints, just jack it up so the wheel is off the ground and then try to move the tire. Mine were bad enough that with the tire off, I could grab the top and bottom of the knuckle and crank on it and see the ball joints giving side to side. It feels like a new truck now, with the new ball joints and tie rods in. Now all that's left for my front end is the Redhead steering box and I'll be done with it. And yes, if you have ball joints, you don't have kingpins.
If you know your bearings haven't been done in a long time, this might be a good time for you to replace the bearings too. You've already done all this work, you may as well if you have the money. If you notice any sort of wear at all on the races or the bearings, replace them. Replace the oil seals on the axle shafts if you have a 4wd no matter what they look like. They're cheap and they'll keep the dirt out of your spindle bearings.
I slid under there today & checked it all out. Ball joints all seem good but I did not see a tag on the diff. Sure looks like a pain to drain it, though. I noticed that on the passenger side, there is an inner joint as well. Does that not need replaced as well.
Hey guys I was gonna post a different thread but since you guys are on the topic.
i'm a mechanic with a 95 f150 4x4 so i know all about these f150s i just recently replace my ball joints and u-joints plus my radius arm brackets. but i was gonna do the same to my dads 94 f150 and i noticed his front slip joint boot is missing!!! which i know is not good. but my problem is finding one, i check lmc truck and npd with no luck, so does anyone here know of a place to get besides having to tear apart a truck at a junk yard??? or if someone has a extra one lying around. greatly apreciate it. btw i do live in Michigan.
I never got a chance to do the u-joints whan I originally started this post, but now I'm into it after my radius arm busted off. I've done ok getting everthing apart so far, but I having trouble finding all the needed seals. I asked for seals at the parts store ( Federated Auto), but what they gave me does not seem to be the only one I need. Can anyone piont me to a exployed view of the axles and such so that I can ask for exactly what I want? there is some kind of a seal that is the last thing to come off of the axle after you pull the hub. Mine has fallen apart, so it's hard to see exactly what it looks like. It may be part of the hub/seal/bearing parts. I think what I bought is just a normal kind of seal that goes with the rotor. Any help would be great.
