I have a 1996 F-150, it will shift very harh and my overdrive light starts flashing once it slams into gear. at times i can be driving down the road and my rpms reach 5000 before shifting into second, i also can have my foot on the gas pedal steady and it will all of a sudden act like its in neutral and then it slams into second. my overdrive light starts flashing and engine light came on. i have taken it in for the check engine light and it was a speed sensor i replaced that and the fluid and the problem is still their. I am in school for Automotve but just havent taken the automatics class yet. Someone help!!!
The only code that showed up was P0500 (speed sensor). I have changed that and still the problem is still their. I have changed the fluid 18k miles ago. my OD lights still flashing and check engine light is sitll on.

You should re-post this in the 1987-1996 forum, you'll get more help.
This is the wrong forum for this posting, but have you checked the Manual Lever Position Sensor? (MLPS). It's on the driver's side of the E4OD (which I assume is your trans). Sometimes the electrical connection on these gets some crud in there and needs to be disconnected and sprayed with electrical parts cleaner. If this doesn't work, the MLPS might need to be replaced. I think they are around 65 bucks if I recall correctly.
Had a '91 w/the E4OD. Changing MLPS would also be my vote. I had similar symptoms, and the $50 part (back in college days) remedied it. May be a cheap fix if nothing is really mechanically wrong with the trasnmission.
Ha so i went down town too get some electrical parts cleaner, And on the way down my OD light stoped flashing and check engine light went out, and she shifts normal again. Would i have a short somewhere, pcm, ecm going out???? any ideas????
