Well, I bought this Excursion and am running BioDiesel. The Horizontal fuel filter thing in my opinion was the worst design ever. I have 4 wheel drive so the front shaft is nearly blocking the hole thing. It makes it very dificult to change the filter. Besides, Fuel leakes all over the place, not to mention my arm pit. My question is! Can the HFCM be completly replaced by a simpler fuel filter housing? Say, a spin on type like in most vehicles. That would make more cents expecially for people that need to change them more. If anyone has done this please let me know. Maby the HFCM cam be put in a different spot. Thanks
I have the 6.0 , One of the filters is located on the frame under the drivers door. Its a pain to change. And spendy. $80 from Ford or $30 aftermarket china one on Ebay.

If you keep buying the China one on e-bay you are going to think that 80 bucks is cheap. Racor made only, ie; Ford, Motorcraft, IH or Racor.
International sells an "oversized" plug. I have installed it on my F350.
It works a little better than the stock plug.
One dealer fabricated a plug with a drain valve brazed to it.
However it will not work on the 4x4 due to the drive line.
If you find a way to move the filter unit back on the rail lt me know!

Talk to your parts guy at your Ford dealer. If he won't deal with you, go to another dealer, I pay $54 at my dealer.
As far as aftermarket, I wouldn't do that at all, I have personally seen too many issues with both oil and fuel when using after market filters. I have seen the original Ford fuel filters also on eBay in the $40 to $50 dollar range plus shipping.
I've never had a problem changing the filter in my HFCM. Done it five times so far and not a drop has gotten on me. Key thing is patience. Allow the water separator to drain for a long time, replace the plug, place a couple rags under the filter housing cap and just ease it out. However, if you want to go with a different filtration system, you might check out the Airdog system. This may give you what you're looking for.
Ok try this for easy fuel filter change , allow water port to drain then use a long 1/2" drive extension or two and a 32mm socket (correct me if Im wrong on the size)and you can use the ratchet from behind crossmember.I have tried this method and it is fast and clean, put rags on frame rail behind cap and anywhere else fuel may drip.
