Something I haven't seen mentioned...change the filter when the fuel is down to about 1/4 of a tank. Doesn't seem to take as long for the strainer to drain out and not as much fuel all over the frame rail. Or at least that's what it seems like to me.
Does it make a difference if the tank is nearly empty?
Btw... is there a petcock on the fuel filter assembly to remove water?
I don't know it for a fact, but some feel that with the tank full or nearly full there's a chance the HFCM could siphon fuel out while trying to drain the water separator. The 3-4 times I've chanced the filters on my truck...I've just made a point to do it when the tank was low; can't afford to waste any more than I have to of that high priced fuel.
Every one is right about the price. I use the NAPA golds and only pay $62 , as far as changing the filter , a couple of long extensions will carry you out to the fuel tank and there you have plenty of room to get the leverage you need. Also please up grade your plug.
Go to a Ford dealer and tell them you want the upgraded drain plug for your fuel filter. It is a must. $16 is what I paid for mine and and went back and got one for the old man. This is something they do not stock but they know the factory one is crap. This one is brass and can be screwed on by hand.
You might also open the gas tank cap to relieve any pressure in the fuel tank. Can save some drain time.
Agreed. I just changed my fuel filters last week. Fuel tank was 3/4 full, truck sitting on level ground. Opened fuel filler cap, removed drain plug on HFCM and got about a pint or so total drained out before it stopped.
After changing the filter I replaced the original drain plug with the updated one. Much better.
Truck is a 2007 F250 4X4 Lariat, all stock.
speaking of the plug. mine is rusting away the threads. Has anybody else seen this? I guess I need to get a new one anybody have a part number? 07 4wd plug seems to be silver colored I dont know if its new style or old style.
I ordered my new plug yesterday from the International dealer. They could get it factory direct and it was a couple bucks cheaper. My Ford dealer had to get it from some aftermarket supplier and it was gonna take like a week. Here's a great link I found that has some really good pics and description. The part numbers for both Ford and International parts are at the bottom of the text.

Personal opinion but I wouldn't be using the Napa fuel filters. They aren't, or weren't, the last time I checked made by Racor and they did not have the aqua-block media on the frame mounted filter.
